Snow

This week was an official "snow day," so what better time to make a post on a story time inspired by the white fluffy stuff.

Books:

I had to pay homage to a classic by reading The Snowy Day written and illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats.  Especially because the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation awarded our library some grant money for an event next year.  Also, our library is adorned with a new and beautiful mural of Keat's artwork from Whistle For Willie.

Snowball Fight written by comedian and talk show host Jimmy Fallon, illustrated by Adam Stower.

A very funny book, Snowmen at Night written by Caralyn Buehner, illustrated by Mark Buehner.

Other Books about Snow:
"The Three Snow Bears," by Jan Brett
"That's not my Snowman," by Fiona Watt
"Marmalade's Snowy Day," by Cindy Wheeler
"Three Little Kittens," by Paul Galdone
"Under My Hood I have a Hat," by Karla Kuskin
"Snowballs," by Lois Ehlert

Rhyme:

Five Little Snowmen

Five little snowmen on the hillside sat.
The first one said, "I've lost my hat!"
The second one said, "My scarf's gone too!"
The third one said, "Away they went!"
The fourth one said, "I'm cold as ice."
The fifth one said, "Inside is nice!"
They marched inside
and then all said, "We forgot.
Inside is much too hot!"

Song:

I'm a Little Snowman
(To the Tune of:
I'm a little Snowman, short and fat
(hold out arms)
Here is my broomstick
(hold out one arm)
Here is my hat
(point to head)
When the sun comes out I melt away
(put head in lap)
But you can make me again some day
(sit back up)

Chubby Little Snowman
A chubby little snowman,
(Hold hands out for "chubby.")
Had a carrot nose.
(Point to nose)
Along came a Bunny,
(Hop like a bunny)
And what do you suppose?
(Shrug shoulders, hold out hands- palms up)
That hungry little bunny,
(Rub stomach)
Looking for his lunch.
(Hold hand above eyes, as if searching for something)
Ate that snowman's carrot nose,
(Pretend to eat)
Nibble, nibble, crunch!!

Art Project:  I went very traditional for this project, only because I think kids really enjoy it (and me) and read Snowmen at Night last so that this project would follow well.  Children glued cotton balls on to paper to form their very own snowman.  I cut orange triangles for them to use as carrot noses, small buttons of different colors and sizes for the eyes and obvious buttons, and toothpicks for the arms.  I also cut out small die-cut snowflakes so that they could glue them into the sky where they wanted.
