For the pig theme today, I opened with a pig puppet. I allowed all the kids to come up and pet the piggy.
The books we read about pigs are:
"The Long-Nosed Pig" by Keith Faulkner
"Pigs to the Rescue," by John Himmelman
"Pirate Piggy Wiggy," By Christyan and Diane Fox
"Piggies" by Audrey Wood and Don Wood
After reading the book "Piggies", we chanted "This Little Piggy Went to Market" as a group. My library has a wonderful set of pig finger puppets that match the characters from "Piggies", and I used this to add a new dimension to the familiar nursery rhyme.
Other Books about Pigs:
"Pigs to the Rescue," by John Himmelman
"Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore" by David McPhail
"Eat!" Cried Little Pig" by Jonathan London
"20 Hungry Piggies: A Number Book," by Trudy Harris, Illustrated by Andrew N. Harris

Art Project:
Today we made piggy prints. Kids made fingerprints with pink and brown paint and used colored pencils to add details for the pig faces. I also included "Ed Emberley's Fingerprint Drawing Book" by Ed Emberley to illustrate the concept of making cute animals out of a simple fingerprint. I included construction paper, scissors, and glue sticks to collage a background/setting for the pigs.
